Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located is located in the Basirgan area in the western segment of the Awulale Mt., Xinjiang, with the revised comprehensive section (by Zhang Zhimin, Wu Shaozu, 1991) in the Awulale Mt. serving as a reference section. It was named by the No. 9 Geological Survey Expedition under the Geological Bureau of Xinjiang in 1979.


Lithology and Thickness

Clastics. Mainly brown-yellow, red, purple and grey-green conglomerates, intercalated with lithic feldspar-rich sandstone, calcareous lithic sandstone, siltstone, limestone and coal seams. Thickness is 1541 m

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Unconformable contact on the underlying Tamqisayi Fm.

Upper contact

Overlain by Jurassic.

Regional extent

Distributed in the area of Tale Pass (with a thickness of 240 m), the western segment of the Awulale Mt. (with a thickness of 654 m), the eastern segment of the Awulale Mt. (with a thickness of 579 m), and the Qiapuqiale Mt. (with a thickness of 800-900 m).

Bivalves represented by Palaeomutella cf. subparallela, P. cf. opinata.
